| What it’s all about?
Every year in autumn, more than 70,000 students from over 700 different schools in the U.S. and
Canada take part in the Award of Excellence contest – whether they study German or not. The goal of this contest is to create and promote an interest in learning German for North American students. Over the years, this contest has gained popularity since its inception in 1991 with participating students numbering over 1.5 million.
How does it work?
The English and French-language video showcases a slice of German life in different topics, and every year a new theme sparks a new interest in students from 10 to 18. Classes (not necessarily German classes) watch the video together with their teacher and answer the multiple-choice questions on the quiz sheet supplied. Teachers then return the quiz sheets along with the entry form supplied to the Goethe-Institut New York.

What’s at stake?
All schools will receive consolation prizes, however winning schools receive the grand prize, which consists of a Young Learner’s Language Course in Germany for one student, including lodging, meals and transportation.
Show your Stil
This year’s contest focuses on an issue that interests almost everybody: Fashion – a global challenge and a timeless topic. Once teenagers realize that fashion can make a difference, they adjust their visual appearance to express their lifestyle. And some of them will even take an active part in the fashion industry.
Dress to Express
Shopping malls, boutiques, second-hand stores – Germany’s offering of stylish clothing is almost unlimited. But for two students from the ESMOD school in Munich, Lauren and Erbert, this is not enough. Instead of following the crowd they are creating their own fashion. At the ESMOD school students from all over the world take the opportunity to learn the nuts and bolts of creating fashion and designing their own collections from scratch. But it’s not only the practical skills that make up a great fashion designer but also creativity. Inspiration is provided in the streets of Munich with its colorful range of different styles. Here, photographer and fashion blogger Gunnar is looking for people that dress in an unconventional, creative and exciting style. His photos of such people in improvised photo shoots even made it into the German Vogue. You too can use your surroundings for inspiration! Get creative and dress to express.
