Temple ISD in the News

Blue Wave (August 21, 2010) More than 600 Temple teachers, students and staff members hit the streets in downtown 7:30 a.m. Friday for the district's annual Big Blue Wave. The fundraiser brought in about $10,000 for a new-teacher scholarship, the district's public information officer said.

International Baccalaureate students at Temple High exceed state, world averages (August 7,2010) The scores are in and International Baccalaureate students at Temple High School fared better than the state and world average, TISD officials said. Of the 27 students attempting to receive an IB diploma, 24 passed exams in May, for an 89 percent passing rate. "We're thrilled. We were 80 percent last year, which we thought was fantastic, but we improved another 9 percent," said Derek Parsons, THS IB coordinator. The International Baccalaureate Organization's Diploma Program, created in 1968, is a demanding pre-university course of study that leads to examinations and is recognized by elite universities around the world as an excellent preparatory curriculum. The end of the course exams are comprehensive, with most of the exams covering two years' worth of course material, Parsons said.

2010 Region 12 School Board of the Year: The TISD School Board was named the "2010 School Board of the Year" by Region 12.  Tom Norris, Executive Director of ESC 12 stated, "As for the school board at Temple ISD, their efforts to continuously improve the quality of education for both students and teachers are much appreciated.  They truly deserve this honors.”

Temple high student part of exclusive opera program Some of us sing in the shower. We, the largely tone-deaf masses, belt it out candidly, comforted in knowing our voices and their imperfections are masked by shut doors and rising steam. Others, blessed with vocal gifts, don't shy away from public performances. Meredith Howell is one of these gifted few, and she has taken her abilities to the stage as a participant in the Butler Opera Center Young Artist Program. Howell, 16, of Temple, is one of only 19 Texas high school students to be accepted into the annual program at the Butler School of Music at the University of Texas in Austin.

America's Best High School - THS selected for the 4th year in a row Each year, Newsweek magazine picks the best high schools in the country based on how hard school staffs work to challenge students with advanced-placement college-level courses and tests. Just over 1.600 schools—only 6 percent of all the public schools in the U.S.—made the list.  This is the fourth year for Temple High School to be a Best High School in the Country.

Taking on TAKS: Preliminary results show area schools making the grade (June 10, 2010)  According to preliminary TAKS results, all Temple ISD elementary and middle school campuses will be considered, at the minimum, academically acceptable when final results are released later this summer.

TISD officials explore ideas for school bond (June 9, 2010) Temple ISD officials met with community members Tuesday night at the Temple Public Library to discuss ways the district could propose and hold a bond election this November, or next May. "We want to know when the best time of year (to hold an election) would be and how we could frame it," said TISD superintendent Robin Battershell.

Temple Graduation: 'Senior Year, No Regrets' (June 6, 2010) The 2010 graduating class of Temple High School celebrated commencement Saturday, June 6th, at the Bell County Expo Center.   468 THS students received diplomas in front of a crowd of over 5000. Guest speaker, Lt. Gen. Robert W. Cone, deputy commanding general for Operations U.S. Forces-Iraq, via videoconference from Camp Victory, in Baghdad, said "A high school diploma is an important achievement in your journey to adulthood. You should all be proud." Salutatorian Pooja Mehta talked about her fond memories at THS, before reading poetry. "We must remember that determination is key in achieving our dreams," Mehta said.  Class valedictorian John McSpedon talked about his love for the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes, and how cartoonist Bill Watterson did all of the work on the famous strip on his own. "It's surprising how hard we'll work when the work is done just for ourselves," McSpedon said, quoting a famous line Watterson delivered at a college commencement ceremony in the early-1990s, before going into his own words.  "For the past 10 months I hope you can say 'senior year, no regrets.'"

TISD Names Top Educators for 2009-2010 School Year (June 5, 2010) TISD's yearly employee award winners have been announced for the 2009-10 year.  Finalists for the awards had to receive multiple nominations from co-workers or campus officials: Teacher of Year is Alvin Smith, Fred Edwards Accelerated Academy; Principal of the Year is Pat Groholski, Western Hills Elementary School; Rookie of the Year is Meagan Reynolds, Bethune Early Childhood Center; and the True Blue Award goes to Mary Ann Gonzales, secretary at the Dickson Early Childhood Center.

Teacher lets students cut her hair because they passed the TAKS (June 4, 2010) Tami Shepherd has known since the spring that she was going to grin and bear through a bet she made with her Meridith-Dunbar Elementary School third grade class.  "I wanted to motivate the kids and realized this was something I could do," said Shepherd, while getting her hair tied up with rubber bands Thursday morning in the school's library.

THS top grads share birthdays, zeal for service to community (May 29,2010) What are the odds that the valedictorian and salutatorian from Temple High School would share the same birthday? John McSpedon and Pooja Mehta could probably figure that out with their impressive math skills. McSpedon, 18, was named THS' 2010 valedictorian earlier this week, while Mehta, 17, was named the class salutatorian. "It's kind of weird," said Mehta, joking about the fact that they share the same Nov. 17 birthday, although McSpedon is the elder. "We've been the top two students for as long as I can remember. We went to Thornton (Elementary) and Travis (Middle School) together."

Jump for joy: Temple High student wins new car for good attendance (May 28, 2010) Temple High School student Liliana Garcia, center, shrieks after finding out Thursday she won a 2010 Ford Focus as part of a drawing based on school attendance. The car was provided by Johnson Brothers Ford and Texell Credit Union. Students Darek Edwards and Ivan Banks were finalists in the drawing, which was held on campus.
