Temple HS Theatre Arts Students Qualify for Nationals

TEMPLE, Texas — Six Temple High School Theatre Arts students qualified to advance to national competition after receiving superior ratings at the Texas Thespian Contest. The students competed in the contest during the organization’s annual convention last month in Grapevine.

Students must earn superior ratings (the highest possible rating) during the competition to qualify to advance to national competition. Students earning superior ratings for Temple High School included: Sophia Pacheco in costume design, Janice Cody in lighting design, Antonio Gordon in theatrical marketing, Aracely Palencia in sound design, Alyssa Maggitt in stage management and Emily Perkins in hair and makeup.

“I am so incredibly proud of our students and their accomplishments! They worked tirelessly to prepare for their events, as well as the show we took,” said Kayla Stewart, director of Temple High School Theatre Arts. “We performed ’The Revolutionists’ as a marathon play and earned multiple awards. Our students won Best Performer, Best Set, Best Hair and Makeup and Best Overall Tech. Our focus this year is continuing our tradition of excellence and our students are living up to every expectation and more!”

As Stewart mentioned, Temple High School was also invited to perform “The Revolutionists” as part of the convention’s marathon play performances. Temple also won All Star Troupe honors and Alivea Johnson was recognized as a Superior Performer in a marathon play. Cody was awarded a $1,000 technical theatre scholarship and the team of Ash Hauersperger, Maggitt, Melody Oradesky and Aiden Wozniak took third place in Team Scenic Design.

More than 10,000 students attended the Texas Thespians Conventions in Grapevine and San Antonio this year.
