On Saturday morning the Knicks and the Celtics took the court and got in position for the jump ball — but this was no NBA game. Instead, it is an opportunity for students at Scott Elementary to learn how to play sports and develop a sense of belonging.
“Good game, good game, good game,” Demetri White, the school’s physical education teacher, said as he high-fived each player after the game. “I saw those buckets you made, good job!”
White has been at the school for one year and already has made an impact on hundreds of students by creating an afterschool sports program along with his assistants, De-vin Martin and Michael Fishbourne.
“The south side of Temple has a lot of kids with a low economic status,” White said. “We wanted to give back to the community with an afterschool program, so we started with a vision of doing sports.”
