Outlining the issues and proposing a solution for all Texas school districts, Temple ISD is taking a proactive approach when it comes to State assessments.
Temple ISD Superintendent Dr. Robin Battershell sent a letter to Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath, and copied State Senator Troy Fraser, State Representative Molly White, and State Representative-Elect Hugh Shine.
In the letter, Dr. Battershell addresses the three predominant issues with the current State assessment, and also offers a solution that reduces the number of tests and redefines their purpose, simplifies the State accountability report card, equalizes the playing field between districts serving high-income versus low-income students, allows more local control and saves money.
Dr. Battershell wrote:
Redesigning the Texas assessment program in this manner allows us to lead education reform much differently than anywhere in the country. Why not do something radically different that helps students, reduces testing, reestablishes some local control, holds districts accountable for college and career readiness and saves money?
