Dear Temple ISD Family,
You may be aware of the new Netflix series called 13 Reasons Why, based on a popular novel by the same name.
Many students are watching and talking about this series, which includes graphic and sensitive issues including suicide, rape, underage drinking, bullying, and survivors’ guilt. We are concerned about the questions and feelings this may raise with students, especially if they are watching it unsupervised.
If your child has watched the show or read the book, here are some issues you may want to discuss:
- The importance of treating people with kindness
- Family expectations around underage drinking
- Who students can openly and honestly talk to about emotional distress and suicide
- School counselors are professionals and a trustworthy source for help.
The response of the school counselor in 13 Reasons Why was not appropriate and not the response that a student in crisis would receive in Temple ISD. Temple ISD Counselors receive in-depth training regarding students in need of emotional and mental health support. Additionally, they have received some talking points around this series. We encourage you to use them if needed,
